Episode #017 – U Pick Luke’s FuMP!

There are two main components of this fortnight’s episode. The first is our report on the epic awesomeness of w00tstock Chicago, which also inspired our song picks for this week. We got tracks by Paul & Storm, Wil Wheaton & MC Frontalot, a song about Adam Savage’s show “Mythbusters” by Devo Spice, and songs by Molly Lewis and Tim Cavanaugh.

The second main component is “U Pick Luke’s FuMP”, in which Luke describes 10 abandoned song ideas of his from the past 15 years, and if you like one or more of them, you can leave a comment on this episode here and tell us which one(s) it is, and if any particular song(s) gets a lot of support from the you, the Luke Ski super-fans, he will consider making them and posting them at the FuMP dot com. (The first comment below is from Luke, containing a typed list of the ideas as a reference for you to use after you’ve listened to the show.)

The show also has News of the Stupid, an in depth explanation of the final scene from our puppet video episode, and tales of robots who try to teach Luke how to be a safe driver by talking to him like he’s a kindergartner. For realsies.

  1. “U Pick Luke’s FuMP!” – List of abandoned song ideas:

THE DAY SATURDAY NIGHT DIED – A parody of: “American Pie” by Don McLean – About: “Saturday Night Live”

HOZER – A parody of: “Loser” by Beck – About: “SCTV”

IT’S GOOD TO BE THE KING – A parody of: “Down With The King” by Run DMC – About: The films of Mel Brooks

HERCULES & XENA – A parody of: “Funky Cold Medina” by Tone Loc – About: “Hercules: The Kegendary Journeys” and “Xena: Warrior Princess”

RED BANK – A parody of: “Denton” from the Rocky Horror sequel film “Shock Treatment” – About: The films of Kevin Smith

CHICKEN NUGGETS – A parody of: “Chicken Huntin'” by Insane Clown Posse – About: McDonald’s

WORLD WIDE WEB – A parody of: “Wild Wild West” by Will Smith – About: Computers and the internet, etc.

STITCH – A parody of: “Bitch” by Meredith Brooks – About: “Lilo & Stitch”

SERENITY – A parody of: “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)” by Jason Mraz – About: “Serenity”

DOOMSHAKER – A parody of: “Rumpshaker” by Wreckx-N-Effect – About: “Invader Zim”

WALKING SILLY – A parody of: “MotownPhilly” by Boys II Men – About: “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”

  2. Hozer. Wild Wild Web sounds fun too, but seriously; Hozer. Do it. Do it now. 🙂

  3. If I only get one vote, I vote Serenity.
I also loved It’s Good to be the King, Stitch, and Doomshaker (ZIM RULZ)
The description to World Wide Web is the only one that made me laugh out loud.
As a fan of Monty Python, I have to say that walking silly would be neat as well.

  4. YAY for luke ski songs about stuff i like!!

Also, after like 2 songs, i decided to try to play “guess luke’s parody.” I stopped the podcast and tried to think of what you’d do with the song. Only got one right. Will annotate with rest of notes.

THE DAY SATURDAY NIGHT DIED – The main problem is that SNL has died and came back many many times. Also I agree that since Al’s done a parody of the same song, it kind of lessens the coolness.

HOZER – yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!!!! We need more bob and doug stuff!!!!

IT’S GOOD TO BE THE KING – YES! YES! YES! YES!! OH GEEK GASM YES!!!!! MEL BROOKS FOR THE ROXORS!!!!

HERCULES & XENA – Very cleaver idea. was never a fan of either show to any degree. Defiantly would have been better done back in the day

RED BANK – Is groovy! I likes’s it.

CHICKEN NUGGETS – Cleaver. Could be cute, but nothing epic about it.(guessed very close on this one, I came up with a few ideas on fast food but not what you landed on)

WORLD WIDE WEB – The main issue with this one is no one calls it the world wide web any more. it’s either the web or the net. would have been better years ago

STICH – I’m not a fan of lilo and stich. it was ok, just nothing awesome about it. so i wouldn’t be that much into any song about it(I guessed this one perfectly. having just heard about you giving carrie a copy of the movie helped though)

SERENITY – OH YAY!!! I love the original song. I love songs that are that style, what ever you call them. very pop i guess. not many parody songs like that, plus we so need more serenity songs. You might thing P.O.’s song is the best, but it didn’t make much of an impact on me cause i dont’ even remember it. so do it!

DOOMSHAKER – contrary to carrie’s prediction, i’m not voting for this one. Zim is ok, but not epic or awesome like some of the other titles listed.

WALKING SILLY – Very interesting concept. Would love to see you try to pull it off with your current access to talent.(I thought maybe you were going with a toy story parody like “toys to men”)

Holodeck Girl(yes i’m including it) – YES YES YES YES!!! At the very least carrie has to do it!!! Maybe she’ll let me help her write it if it’s the only want to make it happen.

So there’s my general comments. if i have to vote or rank them or something i say..

    1. It’s good to be the king
    2. Hoser
    3. Sernity
    4. Walking Silly
    5. Red Bank

WHEEE. not so secret project – we has a dan. MAHHAHHAAHAHAH

  5. And now for a real comment. My pick for Luke’s FuMP is “Walking Silly” because I used to be a Boys II Men fan. I don’t even like Monty Python that much, but I think the song could be an interesting juxtaposition of style and content.

  6. Totally agree with Carrie. Prematurely declaring Redbank the winner. I love Shocky Horror.

  7. Okay, taking them in the order listed…

THE DAY SATURDAY NIGHT DIED – A parody of: “American Pie” by Don McLean – About: “Saturday Night Live”
I think this idea actually has potential… the original song is structured to cover a lot of history, and with SNL you have 35 years of history to play with — enough well-known characters & catchphrases to fill a rather lengthy song. If you’re gonna do it, perhaps abandon “The Day Saturday Night Died” as a song title and premise. It doesn’t quite work, given the show’s natural up-and-down life cycle. Maybe just use “Saturday Night Live” for the “day the music died” line, and make it more of a general journey through the history of the show. (And as far as “Saga Begins,” I wouldn’t worry about doing a parody of the same song. Al’s version came out 11 years ago, and “American Pie” is a pop classic — there’s room for more than one parody.)

HOZER – A parody of: “Loser” by Beck – About: “SCTV”
Definitely a parody-friendly song… not sure about the topic. People aren’t too familiar with SCTV these days. After the Mackenzie brothers and Ed Grimley, we’re entering relatively obscure territory. But on the other hand, if it’s a topic you’re comfortable with, then go ahead! It could make, if not a breakout single, at least a nice album track.

IT’S GOOD TO BE THE KING – A parody of: “Down With The King” by Run DMC – About: The films of Mel Brooks
I don’t know the song, and I’m not even very familiar with Mel Brooks movies… so I’m disqualifying myself from evaluating this one.

HERCULES & XENA – A parody of: “Funky Cold Medina” by Tone Loc – About: “Hercules: The Kegendary Journeys” and “Xena: Warrior Princess”
In this case, I think both the song and the subject matter are way out of date. This one might be better off remaining an unfinished idea.

RED BANK – A parody of: “Denton” from the Rocky Horror sequel film “Shock Treatment” – About: The films of Kevin Smith
Don’t know the song at all, but I love Kevin Smith movies. This one could work… the trickiest part might be the lyrics. Outside a few Jay and Silent Bob jokes, it could be hard coming up with lines that would really work for a comedy song — especially if your audience isn’t VERY familiar with the movies.

CHICKEN NUGGETS – A parody of: “Chicken Huntin’” by Insane Clown Posse – About: McDonald’s
Another song I don’t know… the premise of Ronald joining ICP is funny, but might not be able to carry the song. More of a general McDonald’s theme could work, though — there is certainly a lot of material to use, and it’s a subject most people are very familiar with. (Even people like me, who don’t eat at McDonald’s.) Be sure to work in the other classic McDonaldland characters too.

WORLD WIDE WEB – A parody of: “Wild Wild West” by Will Smith – About: Computers and the internet, etc.
In the 90s, this would’ve been solid. Today… let it go.

STITCH – A parody of: “Bitch” by Meredith Brooks – About: “Lilo & Stitch”
Nice catchy, parody-ready song. Not sure Lilo & Stitch is a strong enough song subject — but then, I never saw the movie, so what do I know.

SERENITY – A parody of: “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)” by Jason Mraz – About: “Serenity”
Serenity & Firefly are still popular enough in the geek community to work as a subject. But I don’t think the original song holds up. Beyond the Serenity/Remedy wordplay, there’s not much to work with. And since you’ve already tackled Firefly in another song, I’d dedicate your energies elsewhere.

DOOMSHAKER – A parody of: “Rumpshaker” by Wreckx-N-Effect – About: “Invader Zim”
Don’t know the song, never saw the cartoon. And so I must abstain.

WALKING SILLY – A parody of: “MotownPhilly” by Boys II Men – About: “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”
Another strong subject, and one that’ll never fall out of fashion. But again, this would be a very difficult song to work with. Not just the vocal gymnastics — the song structure in general isn’t parody-friendly. Just not much of a melody. I’d save the subject of Python for a better song.

So… I guess my vote goes to THE DAY SATURDAY NIGHT DIED! (Or at least, an SNL-themed “American Pie” parody with a different title…) Runners up: HOZER, RED BANK, and CHICKEN NUGGETS.

Really enjoy the show, Luke and Carrie!

  8. Monty Python references are timeless.

Chicken Hunt – have you arlready done ICP & Elmer Fudd? Wabbit Huntin’?

Hail to the King or you could make it about Bruce Campbell.

The Remedy The letters O-D-S-T also scan. So how about something involving Fillian’s post-firefly Sci Fi career? (The fact that Adam Baldwyn calls the Spartan Laser “Vera” and Alan Tudyk quotes Monty Python in Halo: ODST doesn’t hurt. That, and Fillian’s “Bam, said the lady.” was introduced in ODST.) Check out Nate with teh bungie crew from ’09 for more

    I AM 150% behind “I AM STITCH”.

So take me as I am-
    Not too cool stateside
but I’m huge out in Japan.

Some lyric needs to have “Ohana is family.”

    And somewhere near the end,
And then I’ll sprout some wings, and go flying with Vikings! (referencing the oh-so familiar character design on the Chris Sanders-directed “How to Train Your Dragon”.)

All in all, I’m diggin this new podcast.

  9. I just gotta say – DO STITCH! (Or else I will rise up an army of mice to eat your eyeballs out.)

Now that I think about that, thats kind of gross… so I won’t do that… but you should still do “Stitch.”

  10. THE DAY SATURDAY NIGHT DIED – A parody of: “American Pie” by Don McLean – About: “Saturday Night Live”

Unless you’ve got some killer lyrics that can trump Al and Spaff’s I wouldn’t attempt this one.

HOZER – A parody of: “Loser” by Beck – About: “SCTV”

Sure, why not. I love the original, and no one has parodied it for some strange reason. I’m not too familiar with the subject matter, but I could say that about a number of Luke Ski songs that I’ve enjoyed despite not knowing what the hell is going on, so go for it!

IT’S GOOD TO BE THE KING – A parody of: “Down With The King” by Run DMC – About: The films of Mel Brooks

Mel Brooks is certainly the king, this one sounds alright, work with it.

HERCULES & XENA – A parody of: “Funky Cold Medina” by Tone Loc – About: “Hercules: The Kegendary Journeys” and “Xena: Warrior Princess”

    Nah

RED BANK – A parody of: “Denton” from the Rocky Horror sequel film “Shock Treatment” – About: The films of Kevin Smith

If you can top the lyrics of Ian’s Kevin Smith song, go for it.

CHICKEN NUGGETS – A parody of: “Chicken Huntin’” by Insane Clown Posse – About: McDonald’s

I thought this idea was pretty funny, psychotic Ronald? Hilarious! I’d do it.

WORLD WIDE WEB – A parody of: “Wild Wild West” by Will Smith – About: Computers and the internet, etc.

Would’ve been pretty great if it was released 10 years ago.

STITCH – A parody of: “Bitch” by Meredith Brooks – About: “Lilo & Stitch”

    Naaaaah

SERENITY – A parody of: “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)” by Jason Mraz – About: “Serenity”

All hail the Mraz, yes do this.

DOOMSHAKER – A parody of: “Rumpshaker” by Wreckx-N-Effect – About: “Invader Zim”

All hail the Zim, yes do this.

WALKING SILLY – A parody of: “MotownPhilly” by Boys II Men – About: “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”

    Eh, maybe.

  11. My pick would be World Wide Web. It is an evergreen topic, and I like the original to be parodied as well. Second choice is Serenity.

  12. My choices in order:
#1) The Remedy/Serenity – Yes. Based on the topic, I think it has staying power.
#2) Denton/Red Bank – Yes. it’s an excellent excuse to re-watch the Kevin Smith movies so you can pick of the references.
#3) Chicken Huntin – Yes. Good song, but I would also rather see it as “Wabbit Huntin” /F Elmer Fudd
#4) Bitch/Stitch – OK, sure, but I’m *shocked* that its by Meredith Brooks. Here I’ve spend the last 13 years assuming it was by Alanis as well. I guess there’ll be no references to You Can’t Do that on Television.

I give the rest a ‘meh.

  13. It’s Good To Be The King
    Chicken Nuggets
    Serenity
    Walking Silly

  14. My picks:

#1 Red Bank/Denton: Because Shock treatment is the awesome-sauce…
#2 Serenity/The Remedy: Because Serenity is also the awesome-sauce…

    (I am overflowing with creativity)

Speaking of overflowing, that picture of me for ‘Cultural Shorts’ suffers from three big issues:

    1) I am scantily clad
    2) I am in actual sunlight
    3) The aforementioned ‘overflowing’

I am much more visually tolerable when fully enclothed and not exposed to direct lighting.

  15. I know I am late but I do have comments.
    Redbank (Carrie was right)
It’s Good To Be The King (Someone needs to do this)
Walking Silly (I can envision several good videos for this)
