Episode #054 – Blatant Wish Fulfillment

I was very tempted to start this description with the phrase “Don’t listen to this episode”. The reason for that is because all of the discussion content is about a series of comic books I wrote and drew from 1987 to 1996, so if you haven’t read them (and you haven’t) most of this episode will be completely meaningless to you. The upside is that there are several special guests on this episode who did read the comics (Carrie, Sara, Josh, Ken, Jered, Breakman Z, Sean Ennis, Blasted Bill, and TV’s Kyle), and they tell me what they thought about them, the good, the bad, and the cringe-inducing embarrassing. This episode does have News of the Stupid and comedy tracks by Nancy White, The Four Postmen, National Lampoon, Adam Warrock, The Consortium Of Genius, The Doubleclicks, Insane Ian, The Muppets, TV’s Kyle, and a rare old Luke Ski song that makes even less sense than all the other stuff you don’t have any context for at all. If this episode doesn’t do anything for you, I sincerely apologize. But hang in there, the next thing we’ll be posting here will be a real treat, we promise. Thanks for listening, and don’t forget each Wednesday to wish your history teacher a ‘Happy Gnome Day’! (See? You’re not going to understand any of this.)

  1. Even though I haven’t read nor seen these comics, I really enjoyed this episode. My only complaint was that Luke must’ve been pacing like mad, as his voice kept fading in and out and it made hearing a lot of what he said difficult.

  2. Oh, and this TV series only existed in your head? So, basically, you’re saying you’re the kid from St. Elsewhere?

  3. Luke I want to really read those comics. Not that I think it’s good or bad, just feel left out. If you make a web comic I would be a fan, not like you ego needs any more inflating. Checkout the Radical Geek at radicalgeek.wordpress.com. Your video podcast of the geek nation.

  4. Hero High was the show that ran with the Shazam cartoon. It was very good be Shazam was better. It didn’t rerun much likely because of DC’s issue with Capitan Marvel. This was 81 and 82 so I can understand why you kids might not remember it. Get Off My Lawn!!!

  5. Luke was sitting behind the microphone assuming it would pick him up. I think in the future we should have a maximum of 4 people in the room so we can all sit on the correct side of the mike.

  6. Capt Nova, the offer was made to all interested listeners to borrow the comics and send them on to the next person on the list.

  7. Madmike, would it make you feel better to know that at least one other person remembers Hero High? And that you can buy the complete series (without the Shazam! segments) on DVD, or at least rent it from Netflix?

Enjoyed this episode–makes me regret even more that I didn’t speak up in time to be included in the mailing list. Stupid brain not remember stuff good….12 hour shifts and day-long sleep sessions on days off seem to wipe many details from my brain other than eat, sleep, work, pay bills.

I recall enjoying the bits and pieces of Teenage Comedian that you included in the Gnome Improvement newsletter, and I support the notion of reviving/updating it as a webcomic as Kyle suggested. Considering that some popular webcomics have either profitably self-published hard-copy collections or scored a deal with a publisher, it could function as a gateway to draw more fans in to all things Luke Ski.

Here’s hoping everyone at Bad Rapport and all my fellow freaks and geeks out there listening enjoy the holiday season, or at least survive it with a minimum of your sanity (or what passes for it) intact.
